Food evokes memories for me in the same way a song from my teenage years being played on the radio does. A photo of a meal shows up in my Google Photos as I am scrolling through and I am transported to another time. Sometimes it is a specific event but often I’m taken to the nostalgic feelings of a season in my life.

I search “food” in my Google Photos and begin scrolling, looking for ideas of recipes to remake and possibly share for this new endeavor of mine. I come across these incredibly simple chorizo tacos.

The exact details of the meal do not immediately come to mind but the photo brings back the feelings of summer. I’m on the screened-in porch. It is hot – North Carolina summers always are. The ceiling fan I’m certain is on, providing just enough airflow and breeze to make evenings on the porch near perfect.

I imagine I’m wearing a loose sundress with a bandana tied around my curls because that is my outfit of choice for most of my summer days.

I am relaxed, at ease. The photo, this memory of this meal, causes me to smile.

I look at the date the photo was taken – July 2, 2020 – and more details come flooding back.

The girls were away at camp that week so this would have been a meal just for me and Ed. I’m certain we each have a beer in hand. Mine is probably a Blue Moon with a slice of orange or maybe it was my White Street seasonal favorite of last summer – Louise, a blackberry Belgian Blonde. I am crossing my fingers White Street brings that one back!

I look at this photo and I can taste it all and feel it all. The slightly spicy chorizo with the salty cotija and the cold avocado. The cold, subtle fruitiness of the beer. Warm air, cool fan breeze. My mouth is watering. I have a craving for this meal again, longing for more easy summer evenings.
